Corrosion Prevention

Smart Coating Senses and Neutralizes Corrosion

Nearly all metallic structures, such as aluminum surfaces on aircraft and boats, are susceptible to corrosion. It’s a problem that affects many industries and is difficult to avoid since even exposure to air alone can cause corrosion. The effects pose significant damage and can hinder the ability of these structures to safely operate. The impact also is economic. According to a U.S. Federal Highway Administration report, corrosion has been known to cost U.S. businesses nearly $276 billion in one year.

Crosslink's technical team tests their smart coating in a salt fog machine to make sure it withstands harsh environments.

Coatings currently are available to prevent corrosion. However, many of them employ hexavalent chromium, a highly toxic chemical and known carcinogen. Current legislation in Europe (RoHS) and California (EWRA) are helping to phase out the use of this chemical.

Crosslink offers a new, non-toxic smart coating based on electroactive polymers.  When corrosion begins to occur, chemical changes in the makeup of the metallic surface create an electric charge. Crosslink’s smart coating senses this charge and releases an additive that neutralizes the chemical reaction, preventing further corrosion at that site and the structural damage that comes with it.

Key Benefits

Durable. Crosslink’s smart coating is durable, withstanding environmental demands metallic structures are regularly exposed to. Salt spray tests at 3,000 hours, and Q-Sun tests yield desirable results.

High Performance. Rigorous testing indicates Crosslink’s smart coating is able to perform at levels observed in currently-used coatings, without the toxicity of hexavalent chromium.

Environmentally Friendly. Carcinogens are certainly a cause for concern and as governments continue to legislate use of toxic chemicals, replacement chemicals will be needed for corrosion prevention. Crosslink’s smart coating is non-toxic and safe for humans and the environment.
